Dear Professor Carr,

My name is Andrew Cameron Kola Akinmola, I am 18 years old going on to 19 on October 6 and identify as an African American male who attends the City College of New York. I don’t have many achievements, but I am proud of having a 92+ average for a large portion of high school. Additionally, breaking out of my shell repeatedly over the course of high school to become more ‘laidback’ and a bit calmer as well as confident in my abilities compared to in the past. I don’t know if I have any talents, but I enjoy baking to an extent and video games.

The major that I’ve chosen is Mechanical Engineering, this being because I wanted to take Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering at the same time, but majoring in Computer Science wouldn’t allow me to do so. At first I wasn’t particularly fond about a major or job I’d pursue, but I enjoyed video games to a large extent so I resorted to building off of that. Along with taking a CollegeNow course in H.S. it allowed me to decide I wanted a job in the coding field.

Regarding where I’m from, my mom is from Guyana and my dad from Nigeria. However, I was born and raised in Brooklyn after moving from the Bronx at the age of 4. If possible I would like for you to acknowledge me as a person who tries their best, but when help is needed, I might be very hesitant when it comes to asking because I overthink how I look to other people if I were to ask that question. I would also like to be seen as earlier described a very nonchalant person.

I don’t have many challenges when it comes to the education field, but sometimes I simply don’t understand. For example, math was my best and favorite subject in high school, but college math I just don’t understand as well and I don’t get it as naturally as I did in the past. However, I think that I succeed with dedication and persistency. This being shown when I studied for the first time in my AP Calc class for senior year of high school, I did much better than how I was doing earlier in the class and was receiving the content in a more flow-like manner. I would also say that I succeed when I put my best foot forward considering it allows me to do a little better compared to not putting any effort whatsoever in what I’m doing.

I would see myself in some office for a company or at home doing stuff relating to Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science on my computer. I would hope that I have a friend or something similar to that at wherever I work. I feel you feel a bit more comfortable and it’s a lot easier to do things when you’re doing it with a person that you familarize with or know. For example I have a friend from high school that I share a class with as well as meet every now and then to chat in between classes and it makes the whole in-person experience a lot easier.

I would like to be involved in issues regarding software design or object design if you would say that. Software design I would like to be involved in would be something like condensing software even more so it’s even easier to utilize in people’s everyday lives. With object design I would be pursuing the same goal, but by making objects more efficient and of more use.

As stated before, if permissible by my degree, further education, and how far I am regarding the field I would like to be able to make everyday life easier. An object which allows me to do this is the Razer PC my cousin had helped me put together, mostly him though. Despite having to buy an extra part, it’s been very cost efficient and beneficial for me with the computer drafting required in Mechanical Engineering as well as the coding in python which I will soon be doing for my Computer Science class. Thank you for allowing me to open up about myself as well as my career goals and ambitions.

Sincerely,

Andrew Akinmola
