Hello everyone, welcome to my website, whether you be a professor, colleague or student. This website is dedicated to the documents and work which I’ve done in the “Writing for Engineering” or English 21007-K taught by professor Danielle Carr.
First off, what is “Writing for Engineering”? Well in my opinion, it’s a class which combines persuasion you’ve learned in your earlier English classes and technical analyzation contained in the engineering field. In this class we had several goals which we were expected to meet upon completing this course. I firmly believe that through the assignments we’ve done through our groups and on our own, I was able to meet the outcomes stated in the syllabus of this course. The group we were assigned contained people of the same or similar majors and together, as stated earlier, we collaborated on several projects and assignments. These projects and assignments assisted us with furthering what we had previously learned when it came to finding a purpose, explaining an exigence, forming a stance, engaging in genre analysis, and many other things allowing us to meet these learning outcomes.
In every project and assignment we utilized methods and different modes of formatting in order to portray a message or convey an idea to an audience. In this class we used memo, technical description, lab report, and proposal. To physically present each to the audience which would be the classmates not in our respective groups, we would use either Powerpoint or Google/Word documents.
Memos were used to give a brief explanation of the purpose or intent of work done. For instance, for the proposal assignment we composed a memo in order to give a brief explanation of it’s contents. This was done so if the intended audience, President Biden for example, didn’t have the time to read through an entire proposal then he could have the memo to refer to. The technical description assignment had the purpose of detailing the components of an object. This was also utilized in the proposal to elaborate on the supposed solution to an issue. For instance, in our proposal we had a technical description which explained the floodgates and renovations of the electrical systems.
The lab report which we composed was done to give us insight on the engineering world. We looked over other lab reports and analyzed them in order to create our lab reports. The last assignment we did prior to this website/digital portfolio was the proposal. The proposal in a sense, was a full-blown project which would be conducted in the engineering field. However, we took out the actual process of doing the project. Similarly to the lab report, this was one of the projects which were more in depth and gave more insight to the engineering field. It allowed us to determine and have a glimpse of what we would be doing in the future. All in all, these projects and assignments helped with establishing a firm template for engineering.
In my opinion, this class was something which added upon the rhetoric elements which I’ve already learned in English 11000. Additionally, it improved my understanding, along with analyzation of this elements and how to use them for the usually common goal of persuasion. I believe that this class assisted me a lot with my collaboration skills. I say this because usually I don’t have to work with people which isn’t a good representation of the engineering field. With this group and the demand of effort this class required, I truly had to rely on my groupmates to complete it. I firmly believe that without my group, there would be a slim chance of me completing these assignments/projects. This taps into the engineering field because it shows that you’ll always need a bit of help from others in order to complete a task. Even though we graduate ourselves and based on our academic skill, the engineering world bypasses that and turns most things into a collaborative compared to solo field. So, to elaborate, this class did a good job with emphasizing the engineering world and what it is.
All in all, English 21007-K, otherwise known as “Writing for Engineering” allowed me to hone several skills as a writer and improve to an extent. I can say that now I have a more in-depth understanding of rhetoric elements as well as how most documents have the intent to persuade in some way. “Writing for Engineering” assisted me with sharpening my writing ability and understanding writing as a medium in the engineering world.
