CLO #3

With every group assignment we’ve done in this class, we’ve had to write a reflection paper. The purpose of these reflection papers were to explain each rhetorical term and how they were appealed to in each of our documents or genres.

A good example of a reflection paper or how I’ve met CLO #3 would be the reflection paper for the proposal.

This assignment compared to the others, had a larger structure as well as demanded more for its contents. In addition to that, this assignment was different in the sense that it was more specific and more tending to the primary audience. For this assignment we had to decide on a way in which we would respond to an issue and construct a proposal with a depiction of how we would resolve this issue. We would also have to convince the audience of this.

My role in this assignment was constructing the job postings, writing the memo, and tending to the audience analysis portion of the proposal.

The genre of this paper is an engineering proposal. An engineering proposal is a sort of plan which would be used to respond to an issue or a way of persuading someone that work must be done on a certain issue or thing. Along with that, explaining to the audience of the proposal why you would be fit for this project. In this paper, our company “2nd Entourage” decided that it would be appropriate to construct this proposal for the City Hall of Houston, Texas. The project that we plan to proceed with would enable us to minimize damage that would be done to the City Hall in the case of unexpected tragedies such as Hurricane Harvey.

The media of this assignment would be an in person oral presentation. This would be given in class in front of our colleagues as well as the professor. As we present, we would hopefully be portraying an idea on how we could solve a problem on an issue that we decide to do our topic on. In this case, a solution to the massive destruction imposed upon the City Hall of Houston by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

The collective stance as well as my own regarding this assignment, was that the best way to prepare the City Hall for another world disaster such as Hurricane Harvey would be by installing flood gates and restoring the electrical systems in the Houston City Hall.

The purpose is to inform the intended audience about what a good response to the tragedy, Hurricane Harvey, could be. The way in which we inform the intended audience is by a proposal which details a plan on how this response would be conducted; the proposal would go through the budget, plan, people needed, and other things necessary for the project if it were to be conducted.

The exigence for this proposal is the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey in August of 2017. Causing damage to the entirety of Houston, but mainly destroying the City Hall and leaving it in bad condition. This proposal was constructed as a response or possible solution to the damage which was caused by Harvey to the City Hall.

The primary or intended audience of this assignment would be Sylvestor Turner, Tantri Emo, and Mary Benton. Sylvestor Turner serves as the Mayor of Houston Texas, one of his responsibilities include taking care of problems concerning the City of Houston. This means that if he were to read this proposal he would read, if not all, most of the proposal and attempt to understand how this would be a valid response to the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey. Tantri Emo serves as Director of Finance; her responsibilities include anything involving financial planning. This means that if she were to skim the proposal then she would be focused on the budgeting portion or any costs which are talked about in the proposal. Mary Benton serves as the Director of Communications; her responsibilities include managing internal and external communications. If the mayor weren’t to see this proposal, then another way in which it would get to him is by Mary Benton. If it seemed of importance to the mayor or benefit to Houston, then she would attempt to get the mayor to look into it.  In this assignment, the course learning outcomes were met. In this assignment I was able to collaborate with my group members to create a single proposal. We composed two drafts of this proposal, building upon, and critiquing upon the first to create a final draft which is more concise and understandable by the reader. To convey this project to our intended audience, as stated earlier we composed a proposal and detailed what we planned to do in this project. This makes it easy for the audience to understand as well as comprehend what we’re attempting to do. Additionally, we cited sources and analyzed them to incorporate them into our proposal for it to be as concise as possible.

In this document it depicts each rhetorical element and how it is applied within each genre. All in all, showing that these key rhetorical terms and strategies were engaged.
